Types of Software

Software is a set of instructions that a computer system uses to complete certain tasks. Some software comes pre-installed on a device. Others are available for download from the internet.

The software can be used for both personal and commercial purposes. In the past, floppy disks were used to distribute applications. However, in the 1980s, manufacturers began bundling software in computers.

Application software includes text editors, calculators, and media players. Word processors are globally used for typing data. They save and load files from the hard drive.

A word processor application allows you to format and print documents. It is also widely used for documentation and making notes.

System software is a group of programs that work together to coordinate the activities of a device. Some examples of system software include an operating system, a computer device driver, and firmware.

Utilities are another type of system software. These programs are developed to support the Operating System in analyzing and configuring a computer. Utility software can perform tasks such as virus detection, data backup, and file deletion.

Software quality is determined by how easy it is to use and how well it functions. Efficiency refers to the performance of the software without waste. Moreover, software can be either freeware or shareware.

Freeware is a term used to refer to software that is freely distributed by developers. Some freeware products are distributed for free and others require a license key to be activated.
